Jeff's Weekly Pick: Joanna Newsom @ San Diego Woman's Club July 29, 2010

Suffice it to say, the harp and indie music would appear to be akin to oil and water. Enter Northern California's folk harpist (and pianist) Joanna Newsom. Though this talented and critically acclaimed artist recently released her third full length, Have One On Me, Thursday marks Joanna's second visit to San Diego (ed note:apparently Joanna opened for Sufjan Stevens at the Casbah. Thanks TDM for the info). She was scheduled to play here during one of her previous tours when she developed a throat infection which resulted in her cancelling that show and others as well. It also marked a changed vocal style from the one prior to the ailment. What hasn't changed are the song structures , which can last for as little as five but sometimes up to ten minutes and longer. The result is that the songs are greater in sum than in parts. That is a wonderful formula for the stage, which happens to be the intimate San Diego Woman's Club in Bankers Hill. I have been looking forward to seeing Joanna for some time. My wait will end this week. What will not end are the wonderful memories from what promises to be a stellar performance. Those can last a lifetime.

Robin Pecknold sets the stage.

What's the point of recommending a show that is already sold out? That totally defeats the purpose of making the recommendation in the first place.

I think this site would be a hell of a lot more useful if you had an extended calendar rather than show listings for a few days out, sometimes not at all. Just a thought.

wah, wah, wah. sorry this isn't useful to you. considering this is a free site that makes no money, i wish i had more time on my hands to plan your calendar weeks out in advance. when you find a site that does, please let me know. i would find it useful, too.
