Weekend Recap: Di Nigunim, Roxy Jones @ Ken Club

If I was Britney Spears, this would've been the weekend that I checked into a "spa" for "exhaustion, y'all." There were shows I was supposed to attend, in fact, that I really wanted to see (Ché Café, Habitat House, Tower Bar, Triple Crown, Casbah) but I was exhausted and kinda feeling like a hermit all weekend long and opted to not drive my piece of shit car at all throughout the weekend, meaning I was relegated to hanging at the Ken Club. Not a bad thing, but I definitely know I missed some hotness around town.

Friday I finally motivated to get out of my house around 10:30, and I'm glad I did, becuse plenty of my friends were there and I got to catch the band Di Nigunim, which is not a gypsy band according to Peter but who pretty much play gypsy music. I think they had 9 guys on stage. They had 3 accordions. THREE. I love accordion (my Polish roots, I guess) and three is better than one in this case. The main vocalist played guitar, I think it had nylon strings, but I didn't look close enough...then there's electric violin, a keyboard, drums, a guy with a marching band drum and a trombone. There was a lot of "Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!" moments in the songs, but also plenty of actual lyrics that made me wanna listen to Devotchka when I got home.

Roxy Jones finished the night, but the crowd had thinned some and somehow Gabe and I, the lead acccordionist of der Nigunim, ended up swing dancing to Roxy Jones. A sight to behold, I'm sure, but it was a fun night and after the show the RJ boys and a couple other friends came over and we hung out till the wee hours of the morn.

Of course, that didn't help me from being totally lazy all day. My very pregnant sister came over so we could have lunch at Ponce's. (Have I mentioned I'll be a first time aunt in 6 weeks???)

After, we went to the Old House Fair in South Park, but it was wrapping up by the time we got there. Saturday night I hung out with my BFF Sara, whom I haven't seen enough since she moved downtown. We were at the Ken and there were bands, but she's not much into music, so we just hung out on the bar side catching up. After the bar I got the nutty idea to catch up on the last episodes of The Sopranos that I'd missed, so I watched until 5 am, only to see the finale and realize why so many fans were pissed about the ending.

Another late night meant that Sunday I was a total loser and besides cleaning my house, did a whole lot of nothing. I had planned on the Casbah for Ben's birthday, but figured I had to get my sleep cycle back on track for the work week ahead. There's plenty of good stuff going on this week that I'll get over my lack of activity this weekend.
