Starline Theorie was first. They started as a mainly 3 piece instrumental with acoustic accompaniment. Then they had some prerecorded beats and had two vocalists come up that gave them a very Zero 7 vibe (or Sneaker Pimps, according to Firethorn), then they had a guy come up and sing who was good, but maybe a little to mainstream for how the rest of the songs sounded, then they went back with the female vocals and finished on a long gorgeous instrumental. I like them a lot and their drummer kicks ass.
AM Vibe was second onstage and it was my first time seeing them plugged in. The rock doesn't drown the pretty vocals, nor do the vocals make them rock any less. It was great seeing them actually. Porter asked for more light in the beginning but somehow they got turned down again, so I took just a few pics. If you get a chance, get your hands on Simple Disaster. It's not on their MySpace page, but maybe you can pressure them to put it on there.
Young Galaxy closed the show. I attempted to record a song but damn them and their fog machine. I like this band. I wasn't blown away, but I liked listening to them. They're from Montreal, which unfortunately makes everyone hope for some heavier resemblances to Arcade Fire, even subconsciously. They're a lot more mellow, I preferred the male vocals over the chick (but I usually do), but I especially liked when their voices were layered together.
Young Galaxy Setlist, 6/4/07, Casbah
Damn fog machines. ug. Anyway, most impressive was that the guitarist/vox had a broken arm and was playing guitar. Something happened along the tour in the midwest, though he didn't get into it. It was a fun show, but pretty mellow. I have to sorta get into that mellow mode anyway since I'll be at Son Volt tonight (probably acoustic) and the show at Belly Up tomorrow with singer songwriters. Anyhoo, I'm out. Hasta Mañana...
